I was declared legally blind at the age of 9. At first I saw my blindness as an inability or a cause for isolation, especially when I was younger. I got a bachelor's degree in social work and an MA in gerontology at Ball State University. After a friend suggested I try being a massage therapist, I started attending the Healthy Lifestyle School of Massage Therapy in Muncie. As I looked into massage therapy as a profession, I realized it would be a way to become self-sufficient while helping people physically and emotionally.
Getting a massage can be nerve-wracking for those who feel self-conscious or nervous, especially for older people, but I can use something I used to see as a roadblock as a way to help them and make them feel comfortable. I know what it's like to feel shut away or unwanted. I want to give them a little bit more out of life. After graduating, I went on to hold the National Certification for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. I also have acquired my Indiana State License.
My office is currently located at the 310 N Walnut St Suite #3 in Muncie, Indiana. I do home visits for clients who can't come to me. Massage therapy also allowed me to work with animals, which is something I've wanted to do since I was young.
I am also an advocate for the visually impaired. My goal is to change the assumption that visual impairment equals incompetence or lack of intelligence. Everyone should be treated like they are intelligent and important. All life is valuable.
